2 dog breeds suited to a family who values ‘quiet evenings’
There are hundreds of dog breeds out there, which can make choosing a family pet seem like an overwhelming decision. Here to help is dog behaviour and training advisor at Woodgreen Pets Charity, Ciara Pollen, who has spoken exclusively to Express.co.uk.
As a certified APDT UK Dog Trainer, Ciara knows the best dog breed for your specific family depends more on your lifestyle than the dog. Ciara explained: “A good family dog is one that suits your family’s home, lifestyle, routine and budget. Think about the space you have in your home and garden. For example, is there room for a Greyhound to stretch out? Or would a Maltese be a better fit?
“Consider how much daily exercise, training and grooming you can commit to, as well as how long the dog will be left alone and whether you have safe walking areas nearby.”
Ciara added: “There’s no one-size-fits-all best breed – it completely depends on your individual family.
“The key is to match the dog’s personality, energy levels, likes and dislikes with your family’s own.”
Active families living in a very sociable household where there are lots of visitors may be suited to some dog breeds more than others.
Ciara said the “Golden Retriever, Bichon Frise or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may be good options” in that scenario.
But what if you prefer a more relaxed environment, don’t have too many guests over, and don’t want to deal with too much noise?
Ciara said: “For families who prefer quiet evenings and a slow place, look for a breed that’s more laid-back and happier to relax on a cosy night in, such as a Greyhound or Shih Tzu.”
Families with young children, on the other hand, may be best suited to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
