2025’s best game is getting a movie and fans want 1 actor to star | Gaming | Entertainment
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was last year’s breakout gaming hit, earning accolades from critics and gamers alike. After claiming countless awards, including Game of the Year, it has been revisited by fans while newcomers join the battle against The Paintress in the wake of renewed interest.
The French RPG has been hailed for its moving narrative, as well as its cinematic art style and atmospheric soundtrack. So it should be no surprise that a deal to adapt the game for a live-action movie is secured. Developers Sandfall Interactive confirmed the plans to bring Expedition 33 to the big screen – even before the game was released back in April 2025.
Fans have flocked back to the fictional city of Lumiere following Sandfall’s ‘thank you’ update dropped midway through an acceptance speech for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. And as a result, with more and more eyes on the game, there’s been plenty of chatter over who should star in a film version of the emotional story – and fans are mostly united over the potential casting of one role.
We’ve tried to keep this story as spoiler-free as possible – but if you’ve not completed Expedition 33, think twice about reading on. Turn back now if you want to stay completely blind for the rest of your journey.
When Expedition 33 opens, players are thrust into the role of Gustave, one of many taking part in a raid against The Paintress. And plenty of gamers say his “uncanny” likeness to a big-name A-lister makes it an easy choice.
On Reddit, one player shared their fan casting for the main characters, captioning their post with: “Robert Pattinson as Gustave (this isn’t even debatable)”.
Reddit user u/pcavx offered up ideas for six members of the cast, and fellow Redditors were quick to agree. One wrote: “I went into this game blind and the first thing I said seeing gustave was what the f*** thats robert pattinson.
“The similarity is uncanny and i wonder if its in any way intentional.” Another user wrote: “The mannerisms of Gustave are basically exactly the ones Pattinson used as Edward Cullen in the first Twilight movie.”
A third added: “Robert Pattinson shouldn’t even have to audition for the roll or anything.” A fourth user chimed in: “We all thought Gustave looked like Pattinson when we first saw him.”
Even this writer, who fell in love with the game at the backend of 2025, is inclined to agree. Gustave’s likeness to Pattinson is truly astonishing.
Other casting ideas included Wednesday star Emma Myers as Maelle, Ben Barnes as Verso, Oscar-winner Mikey Madison as Lune, former 007 Pierce Brosnan as the suave Renoir and Fallout’s leading lady, Ella Purnell, as Sciel.
Redditors were also particularly keen on Purnell being cast as Sciel. One wrote: “I don’t think any other celebrity could play Sciel tbh. Ella Purnell not only looks like her but they just give the same vibe.”
Our verdict
Having been truly obsessed with Expedition 33 over the last few months, the thought of a faithful adaptation on the big screen is thrilling. Having been burned by truly terrible game adaptations in film before, this writer hopes the upcoming film does this incredible story justice.
To do that, the Expedition 33 film will need a special kind of cast – one that doesn’t solely rely on Hollywood stars. Pattinson would be great as Gustave, especially given the likeness, but I for one hope Daredevil actor Charlie Cox reprises the role having lent his voice to the character in-game.
For the story’s most important role, while plenty of fans have mooted Myers or Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink, I prefer the idea of an upcoming actress with an undeniable talent being cast as Maelle for their big break. Failing that, my choice would be IT star Sophia Lillis – but whoever gets the job has big boots to fill after Jennifer English’s award-winning voice performance.
Having been a big fan of her in other projects, Gemma Chan would be my pick for the role of Lune. While it’s hard to argue against Purnell for Sciel – however, Anya Chalotra would be a pretty good pick instead.
For the mysterious Verso, I’d take either Michiel Huisman or Fabien Frankel, and while Brosnan has the perfect look for Renoir, I’d like Andy Serkis’ impassioned performance in-game to come to life on film, too.
Another voice actor I hope continues is Rich Keeble, given that his character Monoco would surely be a product of motion capture and special effects. Keeble’s performance is truly hilarious and captivating in equal measure and it’d be great for him to make the leap to the silver screen.
