Nick Kyrgios changes into England top on BBC as Aussie picks sides | Tennis | Sport
Nick Kyrgios changed into England gear live on the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage on Sunday and revealed he will be backing the Three Lions in the Euro 2024 final this evening.
The tennis-pro-turned-pundit once again turned heads during the Beeb’s broadcast, sporting an England hoodie in preparation for the final.
Earlier this week, colleague John McEnroe had called him out for sporting a puffer jacket and a cap while his co-hosts were dolled to the nines. McEnroe probed Kyrgios on when he’s going to start wearing a suit and shirt during the coverage of Monday’s matchup between Novak Djokovic‘s and Holger Rune, as the Australian wore a black jacket and cap.
And it seems as though the seven-time Grand Slam winner will have to wait until 2025 for his wishes to come true – with Kyrgios swapping out of his suit to cheer on the Three Lions while analysing the Wimbledon final for the BBC.
Following Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Djokovic in Sunday’s final, Kyrgios was spotted sporting a purple hoodie with an England badge as coverage began dwindling down.
Speaking on the get-up, BBC host Clare Balding said: “There is an awful lot more of this match that we’ll be analysis as we switch over to BBC Two. I joked earlier that Alcaraz would know if he did it quick he’ll get through press and be able to watch the full build-up.
“He’ll definitely be ready for kick off at 8 o’clock. He may be supporting Spain but Nick Kyrgios has changed out of his smart suit and has Three Lions now on his shirt.”
To which, Kyrgios responded: “I packed it just in case Novak went down!
“We need to uplift the programme a bit. I’ve got my scarf. I’ve been on the hunt the last two days, telling my agent to go to the city to get me some merchandise. Look I’m Aussie but I will be backing the Brits tonight.”
While Kyrgios may be Australian born and bred, he will be rooting on the Three Lions as they take on Spain in tonight’s Euro 2024 final. Gareth Southgate’s side topped Group C before desposing of Slovakia in the round of 16, Switzerland in the quarter-finals, and the Netherlands in the semis.
It’s their second consecutive European Championship final, after being beaten at Euro 2020 in the cruellest possible fashion – losing 3-2 on penalties to Italy. Spain also topped their group before beating Georgia, Germany and France to make it to this evening’s final.
The Spaniards have tasted success at the European Championships three times before, in 1964, 2008 and 2010. England still search for their maiden Euros win and their first men’s trophy since 1966.
