Olympics coach restrained by own boxer after shoving team member in fu | Other | Sport

Buse Naz Cakiroglu and Wu Yu’s Olympic gold medal bout ended in chaos after the former’s coach had to be held back by the boxer herself.

The pair had been battling for top spot on the podium in the women’s 50kg classification, with Chinese boxer Wu Yu cruising to a victory.

Wu Yu won the gold medal match 4:1, having progressed to the final by virtue three comfortable victories in the earlier rounds.

In truth, the gold medal was never in doubt, even during her final bout with Turkey’s Cakiroglu.

But that didn’t stop the Turkish coach from losing his head following the referee’s decision, with the trainer having to be restrained by his fellow coaches.

Having sensed the visible frustration from her coach, Cakiroglu headed over to the scene in an attempt to defuse the situation.

Much like the other members of her coaching team, the silver medalist didn’t have much luck, with the member of the Turkish delegate continuing his protests.

It’s unknown whether the protestations were aimed at the referee, but given the dominance Wu Yu showed throughout the fight, it would appear to have been misplaced.

It’s been on Olympics marred by controversy in the boxing ring, with the gender row surrounding Imane Khelif having continued onto the Games’ second week.
