Michael van Gerwen refuses to represent Netherlands at World Cup and may not play again | Other | Sport

Michael van Gerwen has revealed that he will not represent the Netherlands at the World Cup of Darts. The three-time world champion is instead set to enjoy a ‘holiday’ whilst the competition unfolds.

Van Gerwen has struggled with form and injuries so far this season, but his sensational victory at the German Darts Grand Prix highlighted how great of a force the world No. 3 can be. The 35-year-old impressed when beating fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen in the final.

The match was a great spectacle, prompting conversations about how strong the duo could be if they join forces at the World Cup of Darts. However, Van Gerwen has stopped that train of thought in its tracks.

Asked by dartsnews.com whether he could play alongside the 22-year-old at the competition in Frankfurt, Germany, he replied: “I won’t be part of the team this year – I’m on holiday.”

Van Gerwen then hinted that he may not represent the Netherlands in the competition again, adding: “Maybe it’s an option in the future – but you never know what might happen. Maybe I’ll never play in the World Cup of Darts again.”

Based on the current world rankings, the Dutch are set to rely on Danny Noppert and Van Veen in the absence of Van Gerwen. World No. 31 Dirk van Duijvenbode could also be in contention to earn a spot on the team.

Van Gerwen appears to have faith in those who will head to Frankfurt’s Eissporthalle, heaping praise on Van Veen after their recent clash. He said: “He’s a fantastic player and definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future.”

Darts fans have recognised how Van Gerwen is actively trying to end his rut by making minor amendments to his style, both at the oche and generally. He opted to wear his old shirt whilst en route to landing his 38th European title of his career in Germany, which has the same green and black colour scheme but is fitted differently around the shoulders and back area.

Van Gerwen also reportedly reverted back to his old darts for the competition, which are lighter. The changes certainly proved a success, with Mighty Mark landing the spoils and also hitting a nine-darter against Ryan Searle, 212 days after his last.
