Alert to British tourists in Spain as popular resort under weather warning | World | News

The Costa del Sol has been placed under a yellow weather alert today with strong gales and heavy seas forecast along the entire coastline of Malaga province. Spain‘s state weather agency Aemet warned that winds of 30 to 40 mph, equivalent to force seven on the Beaufort scale, will whip in from the West and South-west from midday Tuesday.

Waves of up to three metres are also expected from Manilva in the west to the Axarquia in the east. Despite the possible appearance of Terral winds – a warm, dry, and strong north-westerly wind that blows inland from the sea – Aemet predicts highs of 30C and lows of 23C in Malaga city. The yellow warning came into force from 12pm on Tuesday, with gusts of wind up to 30 to 40 mph and waves of two to three metres.

Local Malaga meteorology expert José Luis Escudero said: “However, the good news is that this time it will not be accompanied by high temperatures.”

The turbulent conditions form part of a broader Atlantic system sweeping across Spain.

Whilst Malaga confronts windy weather, other areas will bear the brunt far more severely.

Tarragona has been issued a red alert, with Valencia, Huesca and Teruel also preparing for heavy downpours and thunderstorms.

From Monday until Wednesday, changeable weather is anticipated across eastern mainland Spain, the Pyrenees and the Balearic Islands.

According to Aemet spokesman Rubén del Campo, the forecast predicts intense thunderstorms with localised heavy downpours, accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind.

From Thursday onwards, temperatures are set to rise across the country.
