Donald Trump reacts to Team Europe trolling him after Ryder Cup | Golf | Sport
Donald Trump offered his congratulations in a classy response to Team Europe’s trolling after they won the Ryder Cup. Trump’s USA were beaten on home soil for the first time in 13 years, as Europe claimed victory by 15 points to 13. It’s only the fifth time that a European team have won the Ryder Cup on US soil.
President Trump is a huge fan of golf and a New Yorker, so he made sure to be at the tournament on day one, jetting in on Air Force One. The commander-in-chief witnessed the beginning of Team Europe’s dominance, ultimately giving them a seven-point lead heading into Sunday’s finale. Luke Donald’s side needed just three points from the 12 remaining singles matches, but Keegan Bradley’s USA did everything they could to stop them.
Their spirited fightback was in vain, though, and the Europeans had the last laugh. During the post-victory celebrations, Team Europe’s players assembled to send Trump a video message.
As McIlroy held the camera in selfie mode, they chanted: “Are you watching? Are you watching? Are you watching, Donald Trump?”
Captain Donald then lifted the Ryder Cup high in the air. Trump posted his response on Truth Social, writing: “Yes I’m watching. Congratulations.”
Trump had earned some respect from Team Europe earlier in the tournament, having caught up with Donald. “Yeah, I saw Mr President and shook his hand and said hello,” the European captain recalled.
“He said, ‘You know what, you’re becoming a real great leader’. It was nice of him to say that. It was nice of him to support this event.”
USA captain Keegan Bradley, who hasn’t been shy about his political leanings, paid his respects to Trump by bowing. “It was great,” Bradley commented.
“That was really a cool experience. Seeing an active President on the grounds of a Ryder Cup or at a golf event, what a cool thing. The flyover with Air Force One, I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life.”
