EDF to offer customers free electricity in October – check if you can take part | Personal Finance | Finance
EDF is relaunching its Sunday Saver Challenge this October, giving households the chance to enjoy free electricity on Sundays by shifting their usage during the week. The scheme encourages customers to move energy consumption away from peak hours, typically between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays.
The more electricity that is shifted to off-peak times, the greater the reward. Successful participants can unlock between four and sixteen hours of free electricity the following Sunday, with EDF the only supplier currently offering four weekends of free power. This year’s challenge will run on October 19 and 26, followed by November 2 and 9.
Since its introduction in September 2023, the initiative has proved hugely popular across the UK. The North East has led the way, with nearly nine in ten households earning the full sixteen hours of free electricity.
Close behind were the East and West Midlands, where 88.76% of participants unlocked the maximum benefit, while Scotland achieved 88.45%.
Even in London, which did not reach the same level of flexibility as other regions, almost 87% of households still managed to earn free power.
Overall, 88 percent of customers who have participated in the challenge so far have received at least four free hours. EDF estimates that more than £2.73 million has been credited back onto bills since the scheme began.
Rich Hughes, director of Retail at EDF, said the company was committed to helping customers during a period of rising costs. “With the new price cap level coming into effect seeing the average annual energy bill rising by 2 percent from 1st October, we’re continuing to provide great value through our Sunday Saver challenge.
“It’s fantastic to see how many customers are earning up to 16 hours of free electricity, especially in regions like the North East of England and Scotland.
“We’re excited to give even more customers the chance to save money and enjoy doing the things they love on a Sunday this October.”
To take part, households need a working smart meter and must be opted in to half-hourly meter readings. Registration is now open and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday, October 12, ahead of the challenge beginning on Monday, October 13.
Those interested can sign up through EDF’s MyAccount portal and begin working towards their free hours of electricity later in the month.
