Carlos Alcaraz pulls out of Shanghai Masters hours after title win | Tennis | Sport
Carlos Alcaraz announced that he has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters draw, just hours after beating Taylor Fritz to claim the Japan Open title on his debut. The Spanish star claimed his eighth title of the year against an American opponent who was visibly struggling with injury and was barely able to finish the match.
Alcaraz coasted to a 6-4 6-4 victory that was easier than the scoreline suggested, as a result of Fritz’s late resurgence. But just over two hours later, he announced that he would not be making the trip to Shanghai in order to back up his success in Asia already.
Just nine days after Fritz handed Alcaraz a rare defeat at the Laver Cup, the world No. 1 stamped his authority on the match and claimed a 67th win of the year – more than any ATP Tour player.
A delighted Alcaraz said in his winning speech: “It’s been my best season so far without a doubt. Eight titles, 10 finals… That shows how hard I’ve worked just to be able to experience these moments and accomplish my goals.
“I didn’t start the year that good, struggling emotionally, so how I came back from that, I’m just really proud of myself, and of all the people around me who have helped me to be in this position.”
But just a few short hours later, Alcaraz confirmed that the winning streak will not be continuing in Shanghai, where the likes of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic are set to play.
On Instagram, he wrote: “I’m very disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to play the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year.
“Unfortunately, I’ve been struggling with some physical issues and, after discussing with my team, we believe the best decision is to rest and recover. I was really looking forward to playing in front of the amazing fans in Shanghai again. I hope to be back soon and see my Chinese fans next year.”
