Ruben Amorim ‘will be sacked by Christmas’ as Man Utd warned by Jamie Carragher | Football | Sport

Jamie Carragher reckons Manchester United sacking Ruben Amorim is ‘inevitable’ and believes he will be relieved of his duties before Christmas. Despite claiming a third win of the season against Sunderland over the weekend, the fundamental problems remain at Old Trafford. Amorim is nearing his first anniversary in charge of the Red Devils but there has been little cause for celebration.

Since taking over, United have posted one of the weakest records in the Premier League, resulting in their worst-ever season last term. This campaign, despite enjoying a full pre-season and more than £200million spent on new signings, minimal progress has been made. The Portuguese boss remains committed to his 3-4-3 formation, which has consistently caused problems for the team.

United’s hierarchy are still backing Amorim, convinced that he deserves a complete season to prove himself with the squad. Carragher, however insists the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss won’t make it to Christmas.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher said: “I don’t like saying a manager should be sacked, it’s disrespectful and it’s a man’s job, but I’m at that point where I do think Ruben Amorim‘s job is untenable.

“It’s inevitable that this is going to happen before Christmas. His stats are unbelievable for a Manchester United manager. 50 games as Manchester United manager, he’s only scored two more goals than he’s conceded.”

Across those 50 matches in charge, Amorim has been unable to string together back-to-back Premier League wins, underlining his struggles.

Last season’s Europa League final loss, and the performance itself, marked yet another disappointment for the Portuguese manager.

This campaign has already seen United fall to defeats against Arsenal, Manchester City and Burnley, whilst they crashed out of the Carabao Cup to League Two outfit Grimsby in an unprecedented embarrassment.

Carragher’s verdict was backed by United legend Paul Scholes, who suggested the manager has now exhausted his grace period given how long the poor form has persisted.

“I feel like with Ruben Amorim it’s got to the point where we don’t want to talk about sacking managers all the time and Manchester United do give managers enough time,” he said.

“He’ll never get booed by the fans and it wasn’t until that Brentford game [where they lost 3-1] where I thought: ‘He’s getting a little bit too much time’. It feels like it’s only a matter of time before things come to an end.”
