Where Steven Gerrard’s last Rangers XI are now with three in Turkey | Football | Sport
Steven Gerrard will be hoping to turn things around at Ibrox in his second spell as Rangers manager. The former Liverpool captain will return to Glasgow for another crack at the job, having been drafted in to replace Russell Martin. He remains the last manager to deliver Rangers a Scottish Premiership title, overseeing an unbeaten 2020/21 league campaign.
Gerrard was given his first chance in senior management by the Scottish giants and the gamble certainly paid off at the time. He left Rangers after their title-winning season to join Aston Villa, having been offered the job following the exit of Dean Smith. His last game in charge was a 4-2 victory over Ross County, with Rangers fielding a very different starting line-up to the one they have now.
Express Sport takes a look at where those players are in 2025…
Allan McGregor
The veteran goalkeeper is now retired, having called time on his career at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. He spent time as a goalkeeping coach at Ibrox but departed that role in the summer.
James Tavernier
The right-back remains at Rangers and will form a crucial part of the leadership group under Gerrard’s management. He is likely to start against Dundee United next weekend as the new era gets underway.
Connor Goldson
Goldson left Rangers in the summer of 2024 after making nearly 200 appearances for the Scottish giants. Now aged 32, he plays for Cypriot side Aris Limassol.
Leon Balogun
Balogun is also on the books of Aris Limassol, joining them a year after Goldson made the switch to Cyprus. He has played every minute of every league game for his new club this season.
Calvin Bassey
The defender has levelled up in his career since leaving Ibrox in 2022. He spent a single season at Ajax before being snapped up by Fulham and is now a regular starter for the Premier League side.
John Lundstram
Lundstram joined Turkish outfit Trabzonspor upon his departure from Rangers last year. He remains on their books but is currently on loan at Championship side Hull City.
Joe Aribo
Aribo is also in the second tier of English football with Southampton, the club he left Rangers for in 2022. He played 32 games in the Premier League last season as the Saints suffered an immediate relegation.
Juninho Bacuna
Bacuna now plays for Turkish side Gaziantep FK, having joined them from Saudi club Al-Wehda earlier this year. He initially left Rangers to sign for Birmingham City in the summer of 2022.
Ianis Hagi
Hagi was tipped for big things during his time at Ibrox but has struggled to live up to his potential. He is currently with Turkish outfit Alanyaspor and remains a regular for the Romania national team.
Fashion Sakala
The tricky forward is now at Al-Fayha, the Saudi club he joined upon departing Ibrox in 2023. He is their record goalscorer in the Saudi Pro League, having surpassed their previous benchmark in January.
Ryan Kent
Kent is the only member of this Rangers side to have moved to the USA, with the 28-year-old playing for Seattle Sounders. He spent time in Turkey with Fenerbahce before making the switch across the Atlantic last year.
