Brits are being encouraged to apply for jobs in Australia, with the promise of fast-tracked applications and good salaries. Australia is a popular choice for Brits looking to move away from home, thanks to its warm weather and laid-back reputation.
There are currently 1.2 million British expats living in Australia, with around 50,000 people moving there on a working holiday visa last year. It is known for its healthy work-life balance, and Melbourne and Sydney have been named among the five best cities in the world for quality of life. The country is also stunning, with Manly and Bondi being named among the world’s most beautiful beaches. It is home to world-famous natural sights like the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Kangaroo Island, Uluru, and Kakadu. In October, temperatures can be very high in parts of the country. The highest temperature is in Darwin, where the maximum is 33C. The lowest maximum temperature is in Hobart, where it reached 17C.
Canberra experiences the lowest temperatures during July, when it can drop to a minimum of 1C. Other areas of the country still experience warm weather during this time, though, with Darwin having an average minimum temperature of 20C during June.
According to PSS Removals, the total cost of moving to Australia ranges between £5,000 and £28,000. Visas can cost up to £5,000, flights start at £600, shipping can be up to £7,000, and initial living costs are around £15,000.
Nurses from the UK with more than 1,800 practising hours since 2017 can have their applications to Australian nursing roles fast-tracked. They could also avoid having to take exams and other assessments.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, which announced the scheme at the start of this year, said this could reduce application times from over a year to just one month.
The average registered nurse salary in Australia is around £39,000 per year, according to Heath Staff Recruitment. Entry-level positions start at £37,000 up to £47,800. The average salary for nurse managers is around £56,300.
This is compared to an average of £37,000 in the UK, with a starting salary of £24,000. The average salary for a nurse manager in the UK is between £37,000 and £42,000.
O’Bray Smith, head of the The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, said a new cohort of nurses from countries such as the UK would be “extremely welcome”.
“We would be very grateful that these nurses want to work with us,” he told The Straits Times. “We could learn from them and their different ways and policies. It would feel like a great addition to our workforce.”
