F1 driver collapsed in the shower and was ‘peeing red’ after big crash | F1 | Sport

F1 driver Esteban Ocon has revealed that he collapsed in the shower after crashing in practice at the inaugural Miami Grand Prix in 2022. The 29-year-old was racing for Alpine at the time and was passed fit to race in the main event the following day.

Ocon has been racing in F1 for the best part of a decade and has finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship standings on two occasions. He joined Haas ahead of the 2025 season and currently races alongside Oliver Bearman. And the star faced one of his most frightening experiences in F1 three-and-half years ago in Florida.

Ocon was approaching Turn 14 in FP3 at the Miami International Autodrome when he lost control of his car and slammed sideways into the concrete wall.

The wall had no tyre barriers at the time, with the collision shattering his seat and destroying the pedal box of his vehicle.

He didn’t feature in qualifying but lined up from the back of the field on race day before eventually finishing eighth.

And discussing the incident during an interview with Guillaume Pley on the Legend YouTube channel, he explained: “I’ve had some big crashes.

“Touch wood, those crashes have never been too violent, despite some of them exceeding 40G, and some that really stunned me. Sometimes my eyesight got blurry, or I had a headache for three, four days.

“I took 42G. For people who want to see that crash, it’s not that impressive, but I hit a concrete wall. That was in Miami in FP3 in 2022. I went off, I hit the wall. I hit both my knees and could barely walk afterwards.”

He added: “I remember, the next morning, I was in the shower and I collapsed. I lost my balance and fell. I was not well at all. I managed, starting from last, to finish eighth in that race. I was peeing red – that was not great.”

Ocon is currently enjoying a short break from competitive action alongside the rest of the F1 drivers ahead of next weekend’s United States Grand Prix.

The Haas star is currently 15th in the Drivers’ Championship standings after picking up 28 points this season.

He hasn’t been able to secure a podium finish at any races this season and finished 18th at the Singapore Grand Prix last weekend.

But he will be looking to change that record against the odds in the coming weeks, with six races of the season remaining.
