NFL London crowd erupts into boos moments before match kicked off | NFL | Sport
The New York Jets were met with a chorus of boos as they took to the pitch at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite being the home team, adding another chapter to their disastrous season. Shortly after, the Denver Broncos entered the field to a thunderous applause, with their fans seemingly outnumbering those of the Jets in the stadium.
Over the past two years, the Jets have been striving to establish their presence in the UK, committing to regular visits for promotional events. They played in the English capital last year, suffering a defeat to the Minnesota Vikings before returning this year to face the Broncos.
Despite the Broncos being the away team, their fans have made it feel like a home game in Colorado.
The streets were awash with Denver’s orange, white and blue, vastly outnumbering the Jets fans around the stadium.
As quarterback Bo Nix took to the field, he was greeted with a massive cheer while warming up with Jarrett Stidham.
On the other hand, Jets stars Justin Fields, Garrett Wilson and Quinnen Williams were booed while ignoring the fans jeering at them.
The Jets will undoubtedly be disheartened by the lack of fan support at the match, especially considering their efforts to build a fan community in the city.
However, given their performance so far this season, that is likely to be the least of their concerns.
Aaron Glenn’s team is currently at the bottom of the NFL, being the only team without a victory and having their defence ranked 32nd out of 32 teams despite boasting several star players who command hefty salaries.
A defeat against the Broncos could prompt the Jets to start contemplating their strategies for both the immediate and distant future, possibly even trading away some of their star players.
Players such as Quinnen Williams, Quincy Williams, Jermaine Johnson and Breece Hall could all be valuable assets to trade for draft picks, with it being evident that changes need to be made to reach their goals.
