Manchester United could be set for a financial windfall from the sale of Mason Greenwood, over a year after his departure from the club. The striker made the move to Marseille in the summer of 2024.
That sale saw United pocket a fee that could rise to £26.6 million. As part of the agreement, United included a 50% sell-on clause.
This means that if Greenwood were to leave Marseille, United could be in line for a substantial payout. The player was rumoured to be on the move during the summer transfer window, with Saudi Arabian clubs showing interest, but he stayed with the French outfit.
Now, Barcelona are reportedly keeping tabs on the player. TBR Football has reported that scouts were present to watch Greenwood in action during Marseille’s 6-2 victory over Le Havre on Saturday.
Greenwood certainly caught the eye, netting four of his team’s six goals. The scouting mission comes as Barcelona evaluate their attacking options ahead of next summer.
The Catalan giants currently have Marcus Rashford on loan from United and may decide to make this deal permanent. If that happens, and Barcelona also swoop for Greenwood, it could lead to a reunion of the two players at the Nou Camp, having previously played together at Old Trafford.
United will be monitoring both situations closely over the coming months. If Barcelona activate the buy option in Rashford’s loan deal, they stand to pocket £25 million, plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, with a sell-on clause potentially providing further financial gain in the future.
Transfermarkt valued Greenwood at €40 million (£34.8m) in the most recent transfer window, although this could have since risen. If Marseille manage to secure that price, United would also rake in around £17.4 million from the sell-on clause.
In total, if Barcelona finalise deals for Greenwood and Rashford next summer, United could net just under £50million. This extra cash would prove extremely useful in the transfer window.
