Iconic director’s ‘best ever film’ hailed ‘masterpiece’ on BBC tonight | Films | Entertainment
One of the most visually striking and emotionally resonant films of the last few decades will be shown on free-to-watch telly tonight.
A story that has captivated audiences with its blend of fantasy, satire, and tender human emotion, it continues to spark discussion and admiration long after its original release.
Starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder as his love interest, Edward Scissorhands tells the story of an unfinished creation with scissors for hands, who is introduced to a pastel-hued suburban neighbourhood.
While initially welcomed, Edward’s differences soon set him apart, highlighting both the cruelty and compassion of human nature.
Rotten Tomatoes reviews reflect the enduring admiration for director Tim Burton’s vision. One reviewer described the film as “touchingly beautiful… a satire of humanity. I absolutely love it. The music, the costume, and set design is perfect. I rewatch it every Christmas and it’s one of my favourite movies.”
Another called it “packed with striking visuals and a raw emotional centre… a true modern fairytale and one of the greatest auteur films ever made! An absolute masterpiece!”
Burton’s hallmark gothic style is evident in every frame, from the intricate, snowy Gothic mansion where Edward lives to the pastel-perfect streets of suburbia. The contrast of dark fantasy against meticulously crafted mundanity allows the film to explore themes of isolation, acceptance, and creativity.
One fan wrote: “This movie is Tim Burton’s most personal. Edward’s disadvantage was having scissors for hands, but that’s what makes him creative. Burton did a great job conveying that moral.”
Released in 1990, Edward Scissorhands was a critical and commercial success, grossing over four times its $20million budget. The film won a BAFTA for Best Production Design, ias well as receiving multiple nominations at the Academy Awards.
The chemistry between Depp and Ryder has been consistently praised, lending the story an emotional depth that complements its visual spectacle.
A viewer noted: “Such a cool combination – a horror character put into a Disney-like setting. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder have such good chemistry it’s unrivalled.”
Its influence on popular culture is undeniable. The film has inspired countless Halloween costumes, music videos, and visual references, and remains a favourite in retrospective lists celebrating Burton’s career.
Despite being over 30 years old, the film’s themes of difference, acceptance, and creativity offer a reminder that being unique is both a challenge and a gift.
Edward Scissorhands will be shown on BBC2 tonight (Saturday) at 6.30pm.
