Novak Djokovic ‘set to beat WTA star to £17m property’ after leaving Serbia for new home | Tennis | Sport

The new, state-of-the-art club Elliniko, in the south of Athens, is expected to have more than 20 tennis courts, plus padel and pickleball facilities. Djokovic wasn’t the only big name in tennis interested in the project.

According to Tennis24, renowned tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou and WTA star Maria Sakkari’s family were among those also mentioned. But Lamda Development discussions seem to be leaning towards Djokovic, just months after he relocated to Athens with his family.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion seems keen to invest in Greek tennis. Djokovic, his brother Djordje, and the president of the Greek tennis federation recently sat down with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to talk about the future of the sport in Greece.

Mitsotakis shared a photo from their meeting on Instagram and wrote: “This afternoon I received to my office tennis legend Novak Djokovic, brother Djordje, and the president of the Greek tennis federation Thodoris Glava.

“We talked about how to take Greek tennis even higher, then the extremely successful Hellenic Championship ATP 250.”

Mitsotakis was in the stands for the semi-finals and finals of the Hellenic Championship, watching Djokovic beat Lorenzo Musetti to lift the trophy. The fans in Athens treated him like one of their own, cheering him on all week long.

Ahead of the tournament, Djokovic opened up on his new life in the area. “We are, as a family, trying to see how the life goes here, the experience. It’s only been less than two months. So we will see how it goes, but so far, as I said, it’s been a very positive experience,” he told CNN Greece.

“I want to thank all the Greek people that I met the last couple of months that I’ve been here in Athens with my family, that welcomed me and my family members with open arms.”
