Trump’s ‘dishonest’ plan unlikely to honour Ukraine security guarantees says expert | World | News
Donald Trump is highly unlikely to honour any security guarantees for Ukraine, a security expert has told the Express. He described the US peace proposals as “dishonest” and were in effect a “Russian plan with some American icing on top”.
Details of the US President’s peace plan have emerged over the past few days, following secret talks between the Kremlin and White House. According to the plan, Ukraine is required to withdraw from Donetsk, cut its army down to just 600,000 soldiers and to accept it will never become a full NATO member. In return Kyiv will be granted a security guarantee modelled on the military alliance’s Article 5, according to the US news website Axios.
This would theoretically commit the US and European allies to treat an attack on Ukraine as being one on the entire “transatlantic community”.
However, Glen Grant – a former Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army and an adviser to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence – questioned Trump’s commitment to defending the country.
“There’s nothing solid or good about this plan, because it still demands, at its heart, Ukrainian capitulation,” he said.
“So it doesn’t matter what the Americans say, you know, if Russia attacks, then they’re not going to fight. You can’t trust Russia, and you can’t trust America. Neither of them are trustworthy.
“Because if they were honest, they would have involved the Europeans. They would have involved Ukraine, and therefore, it’s a dishonest plan at its heart.”
President Zelensky has been given until November 27 to agree to the terms or face the consequences.
These could reportedly include an end to US intelligence sharing and the supply of weapons.
The British defence expert believes Ukraine has nothing to fear from such reprisals, insisting they can survive without US military aid and intelligence, with Europe more or less able to compensate.
He added that Ukraine was “fighting well” and was “smashing the Russians with deep strikes”.
