‘Perfect’ gangster series based on ‘fascinating’ book returns with spin-off | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

A cherished crime drama that’s drawn comparisons to HBO’s The Sopranos is set to return imminently to Sky, though with a dramatically altered appearance, reports the Mirror.

The gripping series, adapted from an internationally acclaimed novel, debuted in 2014 and spanned five seasons before concluding in 2019.

Viewers have previously celebrated the programme on IMDb, with one fan penning in their 10/10 review: “In my opinion this is an absolutely brilliant TV-series. In the beginning you get to know the characters and the Mafia business in general, but as the series develop you get a deeper insight into all the personalities, their psychology, the choices that they make and how/why their actions lead to all kinds of different sequences of events that are tragic, sad, action packed, exciting and entertaining.”

The reviewer assured that admirers of The Sopranos, The Godfather and Scarface would undoubtedly adore the series.

Another viewer declared in their stellar review: “This show is easily the best tv series i have ever watched. I blitzed 4 seasons recently and then watched them all again. Im now left with a tv void and has pretty much ruined any other show [sic].”

A third enthusiast headlined their glowing review: “The best series on TV by a LONG way.”

They continued: “This is a must-own series for all gangster movie/TV series buffs, and the great thing about it is, not a lot of people know just how mind-blowingly brilliant it is.”

Now, Sky has unveiled a first-look trailer for prequel series Gomorrah – The Origins to thrill fans of the spin-off before its debut next year. Like its predecessor, the brand-new drama draws inspiration from Roberto Saviano’s Gomorra, which Amazon readers have praised as “superb”, “fascinating” and the “best book”.

Gomorrah – The Origins takes place in 1977 Naples and chronicles younger versions of beloved characters from the original programme, including an ambitious Pietro Savastano (Luca Lubrano), reluctant criminal Angelo ‘A Sirena’ (Francesco Pellegrino), and prisoner ‘O Paisano (Flavio Furno), who serves the emerging Camorra generation.

Additional central figures include young Imma (Tullia Venezia), a gifted musician harbouring aspirations beyond Naples and Annalisa Magliocca (Fabiola Balestriere), who has yet to transform into Scianel and remains a young mum caught in a brutal marriage.

The prequel also features Antonio Buono, Ciro Burzo, Luigi Cardone, Antonio Del Duca, Mattia Francesco Cozzolino, Junior Rancel Rodriguez Arcia, and Antonio Incalza.

Viewers will witness the origins as youthful versions of Gomorrah’s cherished characters embark on their destined journeys into criminal underworld and brutality across six episodes. The teaser trailer presents a raw 1970s Naples where characters fight for survival amid countless threats and peril.

Gomorrah enthusiasts flocked to the YouTube comments section to voice their opinions on the prequel series trailer.

One viewer wrote: “The original is one of the best TV series of all time. A rival to The Sopranos. Everything about it was perfect. Not sure about this one on first impressions. Hard act to follow.”

Another fan declared: “VERY DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW. GOMORRAH IS THE BEST CRIME DRAMA EVER CREATED” whilst a third encouraged producers to “keep the saga going”.

Sky has unveiled a synopsis for Gomorrah – The Origins, which states: “Pietro is a tough city kid who grew up in the poorest parts of Secondigliano. He and his friends survive any way they can, riding their mopeds around town and committing petty theft. But he has a big dream: to become like Angelo ‘A Sirena, the neighborhood’s ‘king.’

“When he manages to get in the graces of the young boss, he finds himself caught in a power game far beyond him. He ends up wondering whether this dark, violent criminal life is really what he wants or if his love for Imma can save him from such a fate.”

Gomorrah – The Origins will debut on Sky and NOW in early 2026
