Michael Strahan required no camera movement, opening remarks, quip, or even his signature smile to deliver a cutting response to Terry Bradshaw during the latest FOX NFL Sunday broadcast. Just three days following NFL on FOX’s Thanksgiving programme, which descended into its customary festive mayhem with numerous A-list celebrity guest spots including actress Regina Hall and actor Josh Hutcherson, the panel had reconvened.

However, FOX personalities Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady were notably missing from the subsequent show. Bradshaw seized the moment to tackle one of America’s most enduring Southern controversies, the correct pronunciation of a particular nut that has split the nation. “Is it pee-CAN or pe-CAHN?” Bradshaw posed directly to Strahan.

Rather than receiving an extensive cultural analysis, Strahan remained completely unmoved and curtly responded, “I don’t care”.

The incident was a case of deja vu for NFL enthusiasts.

Just a day earlier, NBC/Peacock’s broadcast of the Washington Commanders versus Denver Broncos match saw Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth debating over the correct pronunciation of quarterback Marcus Mariota’s name.

NFL fans humorously suggested that the pair were “Puttin a lil hawaiian stank on Mariota’s name every time they say it.”

This wasn’t Bradshaw’s first live TV moment about pronunciation, far from it. In 2024, he stumbled over Seahawks centre Olu Oluwatimi’s name on air, despite having consulted a piece of paper beforehand in an attempt to get it right.

His effort fell flat as he referred to him as “Olubateeme.”

Host Curt Menefee had to intervene, telling Bradshaw: “No, no, no, no, no. OK. It’s their new centre. Just leave it alone.”

To which Bradshaw retorted, “You didn’t think I could do it. See, I just wanted to prove I could do it on TV.”

Earlier this season, he fumbled through rookie Tennessee Titans WR Elic Ayomanor’s name, referring to him as “Onyemora.”

After several failed attempts on air, he was corrected and feigned familiarity with the name all along.

“Onyemora. Yes, what I said, Onyemora,” Bradshaw declared. “Yes, him. I love that guy. Nothing matters. Ward’s first NFL touchdown. 13-10 Tennessee.”

Adding to the irony, Bradshaw’s wife Tammy launched The Bradshaw Family Cookbook just two months ago, brimming with almost 100 Southern recipes. This includes a standout buttermilk pecan pie that she confesses is the perfect match for her fried green tomatoes.

She characterised the recipe as “rooted in love and flavour.”
