Tourists ‘scream’ as train crash in hotspot injures 30 | World | News
Three British tourists have been injured in a horror train crash in Thailand. Panic erupted on a train train carrying hundreds of people amid a collision with a locomotive at the Wang Yen Railway Station in Kanchanaburi, a town in western Thailand.
Emergency services rushed to the scene to help the people injured in the incident, reportedly more than 30. Among them, are believed to be three UK nationals, including a seven-year-old girl. While some of the casualties are believed to have reported serious wounds, the injuries suffered by the UK nationals are believed to be non-life threatening.
Casualties were taken to the Phahol Pholpayuhasena Hospital for treatment.
Tourists screamed as the collision, which happened on Saturday evening, caused glass windows to shatter and hurled people from their seats, the Sun reports.
One tourist said: “The train had nearly a hundred Thai and foreign tourists.” They added: “Tourists in every carriage were thrown about, with some hitting their heads against the windows, causing them to break, and others falling to the floor.”
Speaking about the cause of the incident, Thai officials said the collision happened during a routine coupling maneuver. The locomotive’s brakes, they explained, failed as it backed toward the parked passenger cars.
A probe has been launched into the incident, officials explained.
In a statement, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said: “The SRT has launched an urgent and thorough investigation to determine the cause.
“We apologised to affected passengers and reaffirmed that passenger safety remains our highest priority.”
The Express has contacted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for comment.
