Mason Greenwood supported by Man Utd stars after Champions League heroics | Football | Sport
Mason Greenwood has received backing from several Manchester United players after his recent Champions League heroics with Marseille. The forward claimed the Player of the Match award against Union Saint-Gilloise on Tuesday evening, scoring twice in a 3-2 victory. Greenwood found the net on both sides of the interval, bringing his total to three goals in six appearances.
The triumph propelled Marseille to nine points from six fixtures, leaving them 16th in the Champions League league standings. Get Football News France handed Greenwood an eight out of 10 in their player ratings, noting: “The Englishman looked more like his usual self, and picked up where he left off against Lille with a little more energy.
“He found pockets of space in the first period inside the box, and knew when to drive at Christian Burgess and Kevin Mac Allister.
“It was his driving run and finish before the end of the first half which put OM ahead, before he utilised that deadly pace and dribbling ability again in the second half.”
“After being played-in by [Matt] O’Riley the Englishman broke down the right, drove inside and finished past the left post of Kjell Scherpen.”
Following the match, Greenwood posted a photo of himself with the award on Instagram, without any caption. This sparked reactions from several former United players.
Anthony Elanga, the Newcastle winger, commented: “Keep it steppin!,” and Teden Mengi added: “Yes sir!”
Current Reds players Diogo Dalot, Joe Hugill and Ethan Wheatley, as well as former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, also showed their support by liking the post.
Greenwood’s outstanding performance arrives just days after boss Roberto De Zerbi challenged him to contribute more following their loss to Lille.
“We were passive from the first minute to the last, one shot on target for a player like Greenwood isn’t enough for him,” he stated. “Shooting so infrequently isn’t sufficient.”
Greenwood departed United last summer after 17 years, signing with Ligue 1 club Marseille.
The Red Devils confirmed the sale for £26.6 million (€31.6m) and included a sell-on clause to ensure a significant portion of any future transfer fee.
