Woman shares how to get half price olive oil with ‘genius’ method
With food inflation still squeezing household budgets, many households have been forced to leave some of their favourite products for cheaper alternatives. This includes olive oil, which has quietly become one of the UK’s most expensive pantry items.
The reason olive oil is a favourite among Brits is due to the long list of health benefits that are associated with it. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, is packed with healthy monounsaturated fats, antioxidants (like polyphenols), and anti-inflammatory compounds (oleocanthal) that boost heart health, lower bad cholesterol (LDL), improve blood pressure, and reduce stroke risk.
It also supports brain function, helps manage weight, stabilizes blood sugar, benefits skin & hair, and may fight certain infections.
However, this has made this type of cooking oil a must have in many people’s households, increasing the demand for it in shops, despite the increasing price.
But one shopper has now shared their simple shopping hack that allowed them to stock up on extra virgin olive oil for half the price.
Taking to TikTok, user ‘susyetionsa’ from London explained that she’d taken advantage of a special 50% discount on food delivery app Deliveroo in order to stock up on olive oil.
“Me after using my 50% discount on Deliveroo to buy extra virgin olive oil,” she wrote on the post, as she showed off the five bottles of olive oil she’d just unpacked.
She went on to add the caption: “Priorities, Not my favourite brands but the only ones available half price! Still a win.”
Several people soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts, as many prasied the shopper for her clever hack.
“Very clever financial move,” one viewer said, while a second person wrote: “nah i live for these deals, i literally get a pen and paper out and work out what’s best to buy and compare the app prices to the discount prices to the store prices.”
Another jokingly said: “Future millionaire mindset.”
Someone else shared: “I bought 4 ltr of olive oil from spain because it costs €4 per liter there and €10 per liter at home… we ain’t playing.”
Why is olive oil so expensive?
Olive oil is expensive due to climate change-driven poor harvests (droughts, heatwaves) of olives in major producing nations like Spain, Italy, and Greece, drastically cutting the supply available to make olive oil.
This scarcity, combined with high demand, production costs, fraud, and supply chain issues, means less oil is available, forcing prices up significantly, impacting everyone from consumers to small restaurants.
This has led to some shoppers opting for other types of cooking oils, while some producers are mixing their olive oils with seed oils in order to meet demands.
