Munyua springs huge upset after killing Ally Pally wasp with win | Other | Sport
The legendary Ally Pally wasp has met a brutal end after a new darts sensation pocketed the creature. David Munyua carved his name into history as Kenya’s inaugural PDC World Championship competitor when he faced – and beat – 2024 World Grand Prix champion and world No.18 Mike De Decker.
While making his mark on the grand stage in one of the tournament’s most frantic encounters, he also claimed a casualty – the beloved Ally Pally wasp. Following seven flawless arrows in pursuit of this year’s first nine-darter, Munyua miscalculated his finish, enabling De Decker to snatch the leg. Adding insult to injury, the notorious Ally Pally wasp settled beneath Munyua’s eye.
The Kenyan swatted frantically as broadcasters switched coverage. However, the PDC’s X account delivered breaking news moments afterwards, writing: “MUNYUA HAS JUST KILLED THE ALLY PALLY WASP AND PUT IT IN HIS POCKET!!”
Munyua is a full-time vet and also shared how he has never left Africa before this year’s tournament in the English capital. In a remarkable turn of events, Munyua also came back from 2-0 down in miraculous fashion to win the match 3-2 against De Decker.
Ahead of the tournament, Munyua sourced sponsorship to afford travel to Alexandra Palace, while he didn’t even use his own darts for him maiden match. Fellow PDC pro, Cam Crabtree, took to social media to share a snap of Munyua’s darts on the board, writing: “David Munyua doesn’t look like he’s using 21g Target darts… In fact they look rather familiar.”
In hilarious fashion, Crabtree then added after the win: “David Munyua has done better than me with my own darts.”
As a result of his win, Munyua advances to the second round of the PDC World Championship. Next, he will face either Kevin Doets or Matthew Dennant, dependent on the outcome of their match on Friday, December 19.
