Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has revealed his intentions to return to one of his former clubs later in his career. The Uruguayan departed Anfield during the summer transfer window, sealing a permanent £46million (€53m) switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
The move brought an end to Nunez’s three-year spell on Merseyside, where he netted 40 goals in 143 matches and contributed to Liverpool‘s Premier League title triumph last season. Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike subsequently arrived at Anfield in the same transfer window.
Nunez had taken part in pre-season for Liverpool in the summer before sealing his move to Saudi Arabia, scoring goals in friendly matches against Preston North End and Athletic Club.
Since joining Al-Hilal, Nunez has found the net five times in 11 outings across all competitions, though only four of those goals have come in Saudi Pro League fixtures, reports the Liverpool Echo.
When asked on X, previously Twitter, whether he would consider returning to former club Almeria, Nunez responded within 24 hours, revealing his future ambitions.
“One day I’m going to come back!” Nunez wrote. “Almeria is my home, I have a lot of affection for it and the best thing that happened to me was meeting my wife who gave me a beautiful family!”
Nunez spent the 2019/20 campaign at Almeria before moving to Benfica. His outstanding debut season in Spain yielded 16 goals in 32 appearances, ultimately securing his transfer to the Portuguese giants.
Speculation regarding a possible exit has circulated since Nunez’s arrival in Saudi Arabia. The forward has been sidelined due to injury this season, but he will be optimistic about participating in Al-Hilal’s upcoming AFC Champions League match against Sharjah on Monday.
Since his move to Al-Hilal, Nunez’s transfer value has taken a hit, as per Transfermarkt. His market worth has dipped to €35m (£30.6m), a decrease from the previous €45m (£39.4m).
The January transfer window will provide Nunez with the possibility of another move, but it remains to be seen if the former Liverpool striker will be on the move again mere months after leaving Anfield.
