Liverpool dealt huge Isak injury blow moments after sublime vs Spurs | Football | Sport

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has been forced off with ankle injury just moments after scoring against Tottenham. The Sweden international scored off the bench, but the attempted block from Micky van de Ven saw his ankle caught between the Spurs star’s leg and the grass.

Jeremie Frimpong, back from injury himself, replaced Isak after he managed just 11 minutes on the pitch and went on to provide the cross which was headed home by Hugo Ekitike. Cristian Romero appealed for a foul, but those were waved away with the Spurs captain instead booked for his complaints.

Injuries have plagued Isak’s last few months after he joined from Newcastle United on deadline day without having a proper pre-season. Prior to his strike at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he netted just two goals since arriving for a British-record transfer fee

Isak and Ekitike have mostly shared minutes but did play up front together at the San Siro when Arne Slot trialled a new formation which saw no wingers deployed. The duo managed just 11 minutes on the pitch at the same time on Saturday evening due to Isak’s injury.

Slot spoke to Sky Sports about both players ahead of the clash against Tottenham. Despite Ekitike starting, he refused to rule out the duo playing alongside each other again.

When asked if Isak will have to bide his time with Ekitike in fine form, Slot said: “No, they can play together as well. I’ve done that already twice this season.

“The reason why I haven’t done it more often is obvious I think, because of especially Alex but also Hugo not always [being] able to play two games in three or four days.

“But they are definitely a couple as well. Hugo can play off the left so they could play together, but for today I decided to play Hugo.”
