Liverpool first January transfer decided in Marc Guehi total agreement | Football | Sport
Liverpool could yet splash more cash after a summer spend of over £400million. The previous window’s signings, which included Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, have not gone totally to plan and Arne Slot has been forced to reassess his options once more.
The now-open January window allows the Reds to strike in a month where they have enjoyed considerable success in the past. Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez were all signed in January and Express Sport has named our first-choice signings for Liverpool…
Charlie Malam – Marc Guehi
If Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate got injured vs Leeds on New Year’s Day, Liverpool would have to field Ryan Gravenberch or untested teenager Wellity Lucky at centre-back in their next match. It’s pretty clear where they need to sign a player this month.
Marc Guehi has proven he’s ready for a step-up and a £25million bid might get the deal done in the first week of January. That’s exactly what the Reds need to aim for. After all, they ideally need another forward in this window too. Given Liverpool’s lack of homegrown players, Guehi just seems such a sensible deal to get done.
Archie Griggs – Marc Guehi
The reigning Premier League champions need another central defender to prepare for the potential loss of Ibrahima Konate in the summer. The obvious choice would be to revisit a move for Guehi, who has already indicated that he is keen on moving to Anfield.
He came agonisingly close to joining the Reds in the summer before a deal fell through on deadline day. The England international would be a solid addition for Liverpool in the winter transfer window, given his status as one of the league’s best defenders.
Jack McEachen – Marc Guehi
If Liverpool can bring in Marc Guehi this month it would represent an incredible piece of business – and potentially save their season.
Their defensive fragilities have been exposed time and time again. Bringing in one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs would go a long way to remedying an issue that continues to plague Arne Slot.
He would almost certainly cost a pretty penny, though. Oliver Glasner has made it clear that he does not want his captain sold in January, Liverpool may have to pay close to the £35m they were willing to spend four months ago to get the England international early. Few would argue he would not be worth the money.
Tom Parsons – Marc Guehi
Liverpool need defensive reinforcements after struggling to keep clean sheets during the first half of the season.
Ibrahima Konate has looked shaky since the first kick of the campaign, with Virgil van Dijk’s powers appearing to be waning.
Marc Guehi came within a whisker of joining the Reds in the summer, before Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner blocked the transfer. And Liverpool need to get a deal for the 25-year-old over the line as soon as they can in January. Otherwise, the centre-back, who is out of contract in the summer, might sign for a rival club instead.
