Four managers Celtic could appoint if Wilfried Nancy sacked after Rangers calamity | Football | Sport
Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy already looks to be facing the sack just a month after arriving to replace Brendan Rodgers. The former Columbus Crew boss has endured a nightmare start to his reign, winning just two of his eight matches in charge and losing the other six. He also oversaw a chastening defeat to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final but his spell at Celtic hit a new low on Saturday.
The reigning Scottish champions were taken apart by Rangers, who came from a goal behind to secure a 3-1 victory at Parkhead. There were thousands of empty seats in the closing stages and loud jeers rang out upon the final whistle, with Nancy seemingly on the verge of being sacked. If he is given the boot, Celtic would face the prospect of appointing their third permanent manager this season.
Express Sport looks at four potential candidates to replace Nancy if he is relieved of his duties…
Ange Postecoglou
The obvious choice would be Postecoglou, who enjoyed a successful spell in Glasgow before leaving to take charge of Tottenham.
He was sacked by the north Londoners after winning the Europa League and went on to manage Nottingham Forest, where he lasted just over a month before leaving the City Ground.
Postecoglou remains out of work and would likely jump at the chance to return to Celtic, with the move able to provide a much-needed boost in morale around the place.
Ralph Hasenhuttl
The former Southampton boss is also currently out of a job, meaning Celtic would be able to appoint him without paying a penny in compensation.
He was sacked by Wolfsburg earlier this year, having struggled to get them firing on all cylinders in the Bundesliga, but could be better suited to a weaker division like the Scottish Premiership.
Hasenhuttl still has plenty of pedigree from his years at Southampton and would instil a forward-thinking style of play to help Celtic dominate teams and start picking up points again.
Gary O’Neil
Another potential candidate could emerge in the form of O’Neil, who was linked with the Celtic job after Rodgers left earlier this season.
He did relatively well in charge of Bournemouth but found things harder at Wolves, where he was sacked with the club languishing in the Premier League’s relegation zone.
O’Neil could be of interest to Celtic, though, with the Glasgow giants looking for somebody to steady the ship and get them chipping away at the gap to Hearts.
Kieran McKenna
An ambitious target for the Hoops could be McKenna, although any move for his signature would cost them a pretty penny.
He is believed to be earning around £5million per year at Ipswich Town and a significant break clause was reportedly inserted into the contract extension he signed in 2024.
McKenna would perhaps be the best fit for Celtic in purely footballing terms, but it seems unlikely they would get him with Ipswich hunting an immediate return to the Premier League.
