The Netflix Assassin’s Creed TV show takes a massive leap forward | Gaming | Entertainment
Netflix announced back in June 2025 that it was planning on bringing a new adaptation of Assassin’s Creed to its service in the form of a TV show. Now the media giant has signed an award-winning director to bring it to life, and you might recognise him from one of HBO’s biggest hits.
As revealed by Variety, Johan Renck will take the helm of the show as its director. Renck previously directed the Chernobyl miniseries for HBO, which went on to win him an Emmy award for his work.
In addition to announcing the show’s director, Netflix has already begun hiring actors to fill out the show’s cast. One of the leads includes Toby Wallace, who is set to appear in the upcoming series of HBO’s Euphoria.
Here are the rest of the cast names we know so far:
-
Toby Wallace
-
Lola Petticrew
-
Tanzyn Crawford
-
Zachary Hart
-
Laura Marcus
Wallace and Pettricrew are listed as leads while Hart and Marcus are down as recurring characters. It’s not yet known which characters they’ll be playing, or if they’ll be brand new for the franchise.
Petticrew might be known to audiences for her performances in Say Nothing and Trespasses. Meanwhile, Hart’s most recent appearance was in an episode of Slow Horses, while Marcus is set to appear in the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping Hunger Game prequel movie.
This early in development, story details are completely under wraps for the Assassin’s Creed show. Netflix hasn’t confirmed if it will be retelling the story that the games have already trodden, or if this will be a completely new narrative entirely.
Ubisoft did attempt to expand Assassin’s Creed to the silver screen in the past, but it wasn’t all that successful. The 2016 movie starring Michael Fassbender currently sits at an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with it weirdly choosing to focus more on the present day – the most boring part of AC – instead of diving into the protagonist’s ancestral past.
As an avid Assassin’s Creed fan, I’ve got my fingers crossed that Netflix knows what it’s doing with this upcoming series. Video game adaptations thankfully seemed to have turned a corner with the likes of Fallout, Arcane and The Last of Us mostly earning positive favour among audiences.
There’s currently no release date for the Netflix Assassin’s Creed series with production only just starting to ramp up. As such, we’d expect to see more towards the end of 2026 if not into early 2027.
If Netflix does manage to push the show out by the end of 2026, it’s set to be a big year for the French video game maker. Rumour has it that the long-awaited remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is due to drop in 2026 as well as the upcoming remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
