Iran’s security services ‘shoot at protesters’ as mass protests threaten regime | World | News

Iran’s security services have been accused of shooting at protesters as the country descends into chaos.

Independent Persian journalist Amirhossein Miresmaeili claimed on X that Iran’s police opened fire on protesters in Yasuj, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province.

He said: “Despite the fact that tonight, on the 15th of Dey in Yasuj—like many cities in Iran—the repressive forces, with a presence several times greater, are firing shots and blocking streets in an effort to prevent the formation of large gatherings, the people remain steadfast and, under gunfire, in chases and pursuits, and amid tear gas, chant “Long live the Shah.'”

This comes after at least three children were reportedly killed after 8 days of protests where police have been accused of “indiscriminate targeting of civilians.”

Protests in Iran have spread to 78 cities and 222 locations as a struggling economy sparks renewed anger and calls for the end of the regime.

So far, 990 people have been arrested and at least 20 killed, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran.

Awyar Shekhi from Hengaw, told The Guardian: “State forces are firing directly at gatherings and protests without regard for whether those targeted are children or adults. The crackdowns are brutal: teargas and military-grade weapons are being used, and detainees are severely beaten before being transferred to undisclosed locations.”
