Trump in bizarre ‘cancel elections’ rant as he warns ‘I will be impeached’ | World | News

Donald Trump launched an attack against former US presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden as he attended a Republican event on Tuesday. The US president repeated the unfounded claim that the election in which he was defeated by Mr Biden “was rigged”, and said “nobody is worse” than Mr Obama.

He also said “the fake news” would call him a dictator after launching into a bizarre rant on elections and former Democrats leaders. Mr Trump said: “They have the worst policy. How we have to even run against these people. Now I won’t say cancel the election, they should cancel the election, because the fake news with say, ‘He wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’

“They always call me a dictator. Nobody is worse than Obama. And the people that surrounded Biden.

“Not Biden, I don’t think it was Biden, he didn’t know what the hell was going on. The election was rigged. He had no idea what happened. He still doesn’t.”

This comes as, during the same speech, Mr Trump warned “I’ll be impeached” if the Republican Party doesn’t do well in the midterm elections.

He said: “You gotta win the midterms. Because if we don’t win the midterms, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”

This is not the first time he has commented on or joked about cancelling the 2028 election. During a conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, who has been criticised by Russia for not holding elections while his country has been unlawfully invaded, explained that there are no elections when martial law is in effect.

The US president responded: “So you say during the war, you can’t have elections. So let me just say, three and a half years from now – so you mean, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections? Oh, that’s good.”

He also sells a “Trump 2028 Hat” on his website for $50 (£37), with the description: “The future looks bright! Rewrite the rules with the Trump 2028 high crown hat.”

While the US Constitution prevents a president from running for a third term, Mr Trump previously said “there are methods which you could do it”.

He told NBC: “I’m not joking… a lot of people want me to do it. But, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”

In January last year, the Republican also said it would be “the greatest honour of my life to serve not once, but twice or three times or four times”.
