Trump boasts as US to get huge amount of oil from Venezuela | World | News
“This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!”
Trump added he has already been in talks with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in order to execute the plan “immediately”.
Trump added: “[The oil] will be taken by storage ships, and brought directly to unloading docks in the United States.”
The oil deal comes only days after US troops stormed the home of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro in a pre-dawn raid that shocked the world. Maduro was then renditioned to the United States to face multiple drugs and weapons charges, including a charge of narcoterrorism.
The announcement comes as the White House continues to prepare for an Oval Office meeting on Friday with oil company executives to discuss the situation in Venezuela. AP reports that representatives of Exxon, Chevron and ConocoPhillips are expected to attend.
Venezuela has millions of barrels of oil loaded on tankers and in storage tanks that it has been unable to ship due to a blockade on exports imposed by US President Donald Trump since mid-December.
With Maduro now in US custody, Trump has wasted no time at all on the topic of oil. Mere hours after US forces captured the now-ousted Venezuelan leader, Trump sat down with the New York Post to discuss the American military operation… and to talk oil.
“We should run the country with law and order,” Trump said on Sunday. It took a total of eight sentences into the Post story for Trump to bring up oil, telling the Post: “We should run the country where we can take advantage of the economics of what they have – which is valuable oil and valuable other things,” he said.
Russian billionaire and oligarch Oleg Deripaska has already warned that US control over Venezuelan oil fields – the largest in the world – will have serious consequences for the state economy.
“If our American ‘partners’ reach Venezuela’s oil fields (and they have already reached Guyana’s), they’ll control more than half of the world’s oil reserves,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
“And apparently their plan is to ensure that the price of our oil doesn’t rise above $50 per barrel. This means that our sacred state-capitalism will find it difficult to leave everything as it is.”
