Man Utd coach breaks silence on Ruben Amorim sacking and sends pointed message | Football | Sport
Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Fernandes has broken his silence on social media following his departure from the club. He left alongside manager Ruben Amorim on Monday, after the 1-1 stalemate with Leeds United over the weekend. Mounting pressure on Amorim intensified after his post-match press conference exposed friction between the manager and the club’s senior figures. Within hours, United announced the Portuguese boss’s exit.
The coaching reshuffle also saw the departure of first team coaches Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and fitness coach Paulo Barreira. Taking to Instagram, Fernandes shared his thoughts alongside photographs from his spell at Old Trafford. It included a pointed message, thanking only the staff members who showed ‘true support’.
He wrote: “Thank you, Manchester United. Thank you to the world-class players I had the privilege to coach and to learn from. Thank you to the staff members who showed true support. Thank you to the fans who stood by us.
“In the end, working at a football club of this dimension doesn’t just test your knowledge – it reveals character. A special chapter in my life. Proud to have served as assistant manager of Manchester United.”
United’s focus now shifts to appointing Amorim’s successor. The club have opened discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy about taking the reins on an interim basis until the campaign concludes.
Solskjaer is emerging as the frontrunner for the position. The Norwegian departed Old Trafford in 2021 following a three-year tenure at the helm.
With United set to take to the pitch against Burnley on Wednesday evening, under-18s manager Darren Fletcher will assume temporary control of the side.
He’ll be supported by former centre-back Jonny Evans, who is poised to make a swift comeback just months after stepping down from his loan manager position, alongside Travis Binnon and Alan Wright.
Providing an update on the managerial hunt, Fletcher commented: “I’ve had a conversation and the focus was on this game and we’ll speak after the game.
“I’ve got a game to prepare, training session to organise, speak to players. The focus has been on the Burnley match and we’ll speak after the game.”
When questioned about his interest in the role on a permanent basis, he responded: “Honestly, it’s not something I’ve thought about. That discussion is for after the game. It’s all happened so quickly, all my concentration and efforts are going on Burnley.”
Reflecting on taking charge of United, Fletcher said: “It’s surreal, it’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team. I didn’t think in my wildest dreams that was something that could happen.
“To lead out a team is an amazing honour and something I’m really proud of. Not in the circumstances I expected, that’s something that doesn’t sit easy with me, but I’ve got a job to do and will think of the honour and pride.”
