War film hailed ‘must-watch’ by fans on BBC tonight | Films | Entertainment

A wartime epic hailed as “a must-watch film” for any fan of war movies airs on BBC this evening, boasting a stellar ensemble cast. Released in 1961, The Guns of Navarone stands as a defining Second World War drama adapted from Alistair MacLean’s celebrated novel.

The picture features Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Stanley Baker, Anthony Quayle, Irene Papas, Gia Scala, and James Darren. Set in 1943, the story follows a small commando unit tasked with demolishing massive German artillery installations on the Greek Island of Navarone to liberate Allied forces stranded on Kheros. Under the command of British Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle), the squad comprises American officer Mallory (Gregory Peck), Greek resistance operative Stavros (Anthony Quinn) and hesitant demolitions specialist Miller.

Confronting seemingly insurmountable challenges, the soldiers navigate treacherous waters and formidable rock faces. After Franklin sustains injuries, Mallory assumes leadership, leading to tensions and personal conflicts bubbling to the surface.

Now 65 years since its debut, the production earned seven Academy Award nominations, clinching Best Special Effects for Bill Warrington and Chris Greenham.

The picture has achieved legendary status and, intriguingly, Peck and Niven forged a lasting bond during filming, reportedly sharing brandy to ward off the cold; Peck later honoured his friend by delivering Niven’s eulogy following his passing in 1983.

Despite being over six decades old, the film maintains an outstanding 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering numerous five-star reviews.

One admirer, as reported by The Mirror, declared: “A must-watch film for any fan of war movies. Great performances by Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn.”

Another fan praised: “Awesome cast, unrelenting suspense great dialogue, good plot twists. They don’t give Oscars for ensemble casts, but Anthony Quinn deserved a supporting for his performance.

“The film features outstanding performances, breathtaking scenery, and a compelling storyline that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.”

A third viewer commented: “It’s well-crafted tension and heroic exploits make it a timeless classic that highlights the courage and ingenuity of those fighting against overwhelming odds.”

One five-star review read: “Hard to beat this movie. Even though it’s a classic escapist adventure you can really feel the emotional residue of WW2, which was still well within the living memory of the writer, director and actors. They knew all about the sacrifices and hard moral decisions in warfare, and it shows.”

Another user posted: “This mission requires not only nerves of steel, as a group of soldiers lead a trek on the island of Navarone to destroy two massive cannons!

“Captain Mallory and his motley band infiltrate the German-occupied island as their personal conflicts over the situation and danger around every corner leading to some complications. Led by the intense Gregory Peck, this movie manages to stay relevant despite the years that have passed, making it an unknown masterpiece.”

The Guns of Navarone airs on Thursday January 8 on BBC4 at 8pm.
