Where was Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation filmed? | Films | Entertainment
Netflix’s newest rom-com whisks audiences around the world, but production was confined to just two cities.
Adapted from Emily Henry’s popular bestseller, People We Meet on Vacation charts the journey of improbable best friends Alex (portrayed by Tom Blyth) and Poppy (Emily Bader), who embark on annual week-long holidays together each summer.
Beginning this ritual during their university years, the pair maintain it for ten years. But their friendship hits rocky ground when romantic feelings begin to surface, leaving them wondering if they’re destined for something more.
Director Brett Haley, who previously brought young adult novels All the Bright Places and Looking for Alaska to screen, helmed the adaptation of this charming romance.
Despite the story following Poppy and Alex on worldwide adventures, Haley has disclosed that production only took place between Spain and the United States, reports the Mirror.
The bulk of filming occurred in Barcelona and surrounding areas, including scenes of Poppy’s New York City workplace and the pivotal Tuscany getaway.
Speaking to Netflix before the film’s launch, Haley explained: “We shot 65% of the film in and around Barcelona, in Spain. The biggest challenge of the film, by far, was how to pull off Canada, Tuscany, New Orleans, Ohio, and New York City in the Barcelona area.”
He added: “My production designer, Bruce Curtis, did an incredible job of finding locations that we could make feel like Canada – which was very difficult to do.”
Tuscany proved far easier to recreate, Haley noted. “There are some areas of Spain that certainly have a Tuscany, Italy, countryside vibe,” he elaborated, adding: “We didn’t use that many sets. Everything you see is mostly practical.
“I think the only set we had was Poppy’s apartment, and then we found a couple of locations in Spain that were also good for New York City.”
Eagle-eyed fans noticed the film crew in Lloret de Mar, a coastal town in Spain, which seems to be the location of the final beach scene. Instagram account @Pwmovupdates even posted photos of Bader and Blyth on set, taken by fans back in October 2024.
The remainder of the production took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. This includes the small Ohio hometown of Poppy and Alex.
Haley disclosed: “We shot 40 to 50% in New Orleans, in Louisiana – you can’t pull off New Orleans in Spain. Then New Orleans was Boston and Ohio.”
Fans also spotted the crew in New Orleans in October 2024, although it’s unclear which scenes were being filmed.
Given the story unfolds across continents, Haley admits that “a lot of trickery” went into making the rom-com believable.
“So there’s a lot of invisible trickery going on to pull off the locations. I want people to feel like ‘Wow, they went all around the world to shoot this film’ because that’s the way it should feel,” he expressed.
