Iran threatens to attack US bases and Israel as Trump plots intervention | World | News
Iran has threatened to attack the US bases in a stern warning to Donald Trump as Israel placed its military on high alert amid fears linked to Iran’s anti-regime protests in years. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, speaking in parliament on Sunday, warned the United States against “a miscalculation.”
During a tense session of parliament that was aired on Iranian state television, Qalibaf declared that Tehran would respond immediately to any attack, according to agency reports. As he spoke, lawmakers surged toward the podium, shouting “Death to America!” in a show of anger and defiance.
The warning was issued at a time when US President Donald Trump had been openly condemning Iran’s response to the protests and hinting that Washington might intervene if Iranian forces cracked down on demonstrators.
Trump offered support for the protesters, saying on social media that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”
His remark on Saturday further intensified regional tensions. According to the sources, Israel is on high alert for the possibility of a US intervention to support a nationwide protest movement in Iran.
Mr Trump has cautioned Iran’s leaders not to use harsh or violent tactics against protesters, warning that the United States would react strongly if they did.
At the same time, the White House noted that he was monitoring the situation very carefully, but it did not say whether he was actually considering military action.
Large‑scale demonstrations against Iran’s ruling theocracy have continued for more than two weeks now, with huge crowds gathering in both Tehran.
Activist groups reported that the unrest had become increasingly deadly, saying that at least 116 people had been killed as security forces clashed with protesters.
