Man Utd player ratings vs Brighton: Five players get 4/10 in shambolic FA Cup defeat | Football | Sport

Manchester United were unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton and Hove Albion despite the Seagulls making six changes for their visit to Old Trafford. The hosts made a promising start to the match, with Diogo Dalot missing two huge chances to open the scoring. Just minutes later, the Red Devils were punished for their wastefulness when Brajan Gruda slammed home to give Brighton the lead.

United nearly conceded a quick-fire second when Senne Lammens passed straight to Danny Welbeck, who failed to hit the target against his former club before Georginio Rutter had a header cleared off the line. Welbeck eventually got his goal in the second half, finding the top corner to double Brighton’s advantage. The hosts were given a late lifeline when Benjamin Sesko headed home in the closing stages before teenager Shea Lacey picked up a second booking for throwing the ball away in a moment of madness.

It was a nervy end to the match with Darren Fletcher’s side pushing hard for an equaliser, but it never arrived and they succumbed to yet another defeat.

Express Sport rates and slates the United players following today’s dismal defeat…

Man Utd player ratings vs Brighton

Senne Lammens – 5

Couldn’t have done much about either goal but nearly gave one away with a hospital pass that was intercepted. Not entirely convincing.

Diogo Dalot – 4

Fluffed an early chance to score with a poor first touch and failed to defend well enough for Brighton’s opener. Not his best display.

Lisandro Martinez – 6

Repeatedly got forward to involve himself in attacking moves and had a couple of decent chances. Was the best of a bad bunch in defence.

Leny Yoro – 4

Was among the players at fault for both goals and didn’t do much in possession, failing to move the ball particularly well. Poor.

Patrick Dorgu – 4

Didn’t cover himself in glory while trying to stop the opening goal and looked clumsy both in and out of possession. Not good enough.

Manuel Ugarte – 4

You’d be forgiven for not even realising he was on the pitch. Allowed the game to pass him by and when he did have the ball, he lost it more often than not.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Worked hard at both ends of the pitch on his return to the starting line-up and was a rare bright spark on an otherwise poor day for the Red Devils.

Mason Mount – 4

Failed to get close enough to Danny Welbeck in the build-up to Brighton’s opener. Didn’t defend well and struggled to make an impact in attack. Really poor.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Nearly scored with a curling effort from range but couldn’t influence the result. Got frustrated with his team-mates on several occasions and for good reason.

Matheus Cunha – 6

Produced a brilliant pass from deep to find Dalot in the opening exchanges. Worked hard to make a difference but couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

Benjamin Sesko – 5

Didn’t offer much until his late goal and was repeatedly flagged offside due to the poor timing of his attacking runs. Took his header well, though.

Substitutes

Joshua Zirkzee – 5

Came on in the second half with United chasing the game but was unable to inspire an unlikely comeback.

Shea Lacey – 5

Introduced on the hour mark and looked lively on the right flank, but got himself a second booking for throwing the ball away. Brainless from the youngster.

Casemiro – 6

Played the final 12 minutes but should probably have started the match in place of Ugarte.

Harry Maguire – 6

Came off the bench in the closing stages and did okay without setting the world alight.
