‘Masterpiece’ film hailed as ‘best Tom Cruise movie ever’ is streaming | Films | Entertainment
An Oscar Award-winning movie with two renowned Hollywood actors is now free to stream. The “cinematic masterpiece”, which features Tom Cruise in one of his earliest roles, has been described as an “inspiring” film that everyone “should watch at least once”.
Rain Man, which also stars Tootsie’s Dustin Hoffman, is directed by Barry Levinson and has a high 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 1988 film also received eight nominations at the 61st Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Hoffman), and Best Original Screenplay.
The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis reads: “When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father’s $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives.
“Motivated by his father’s money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers’ cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.”
Taking to the reviews section, fans were keen to share their thoughts on the drama, which is free to stream on Pluto TV until March 31. One fan wrote: “Rain Man is a cinematic masterpiece featuring Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, and Bonnie Hunt in remarkable roles.”
“An absolute masterpiece!” another enthused, as a third reflected: “One of the best movies to win Best Picture and actually earn it, Rain Man is a poignant drama. The film is very emotional and manages to be both moving and funny owing to the phenomenal performances of Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.”
“Best Tom Cruise movie,” another fan insisted, as one more stated: “One of my all time favourite films, a film so good that no matter when I’ve watched it over the years I still enjoy it every time and I believe it’s to do with the fact it has so many layers to the story. Easily my fave Tom Cruise film.”
Other fans called the film “the best movie ever made”, “one of those all-time greats” and “a movie everyone should watch at least once”, while one more said: “An excellent movie and possibly Tom Cruise’s best role.”
Speaking at BFI Southbank last year, Cruise revealed to interviewer Edith Bowman how he had landed the role in Rainman after spotting Hoffman while grabbing a bite with his younger sister, Cass Capazorio.
He told the audience at the time: “She said, ‘You’ve got to go over and say you love him.’
“She doesn’t usually do stuff like that and I don’t walk up to people and introduce myself, but she was so pushy. She said, ‘If you don’t, I’m going to.’
“He had his hat on and was ordering takeout. I stood next to him and said, ‘Excuse me, Mr Hoffman, I’m sorry…’ and he looked at me and said, ‘Cruise!’
“That’s how I met him,” Cruise revealed, before adding: “As I was leaving, he said, ‘I want to make a movie with you,’ and I said, ‘That would be nice.’ A year later he sent Rain Man to me.”
Rain Man is available to stream now for free on Pluto TV or on Netflix for a subscription fee.
