A 30-year-old man in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, near India’s border with Nepal, was arrested on Monday after allegedly killing his mother and wife in a gruesome assault that shocked an entire village. Authorities say the suspect, Sikandar Gupta, attacked the women on the roof of their home in Parsa village, beating them with sticks before smashing their heads with bricks.

They allege that he then mutilated the bodies in front of horrified residents. Police confirmed that the victims were identified as Runa Devi, 60, and Priyanka, 28. The incident drew dozens of villagers who rushed to the house after hearing cries for help.

Gupta is also accused of throwing pieces of flesh toward the crowd, sparking panic before officers subdued and detained him. Investigators revealed that Gupta had returned to the village about a month earlier after working in Mumbai.

Locals described him as addicted to alcohol and cannabis, with a history of violence against his family. They said he frequently threatened to kill his mother and wife. Supt of Police Keshav Mishra stated that a case of double murder has been registered and that Gupta’s mental condition is under examination.

Experts have suggested that the crime may reflect severe psychological disturbance. Ashok Srivastava, a criminologist affiliated with the National Forensic Sciences University, said acts of cannibalism often stem from extreme psychopathology, trauma, and a desire for dominance.

He explained that such behaviour represents “the ultimate manifestation of control and power,” reducing victims to objects in the perpetrator’s mind.

Clinical psychologist PK Khattri added that Gupta’s agitation and refusal to speak point to possible psychosis, a serious mental illness that can cause delusions and hallucinations.

The killings have left the community in shock, with residents and police alike struggling to comprehend the brutality of the crime.
