Households urged to check for six-letter code for DWP Cold Weather Payment | Personal Finance | Finance
Hundreds of thousands of UK households will be receiving a £25 payment as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that the brutal cold weather has triggered financial support for 802 postcodes across the UK, with some households receiving a double payout of £50.
The Cold Weather Payment scheme supports Brits with a payment that can be put towards heating bills during periods of freezing weather. Those eligible are handed £25 for every seven-day period during which temperatures drop to zero degrees or below. The funds are paid automatically; however, please note down a code to ensure you receive the amount to which you are entitled.
Attempting to track every transaction, every day, can be a significant effort, which is why people in England and Wales should look out for their National Insurance number followed by the six-letter code “DWP CWP” on their statements.
For those in Northern Ireland, the payment will also appear with your National Insurance number, but will be followed up with the code “SSA CWP” instead.
The scheme runs from now until March 31, and there is no limit to the number of payments that can be issued. This means that if it freezes for another week, you will receive another £25.
Those on certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Universal Credit, qualify for the cold weather payment.
Those who receive support for mortgage interest can also receive cold-weather payments.
The payments are made within 14 working days of your postcode being triggered and are paid directly into the same bank account or building society where you receive your benefits.
If you don’t receive a payment but think you should have, please inform the Pension Service by calling them on 0800 731 0469 or contact Jobcentre Plus by visiting your local centre.
