Gervonta Davis arrest warrant issued after Jake Paul bout collapse | Boxing | Sport
An arrest warrant has been issued for boxing sensation Gervonta “Tank” Davis in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident from October last year, which led to the cancellation of the WBA lightweight champion’s exhibition fight with Jake Paul. The charges include false imprisonment, battery and attempted kidnapping, following accusations made by a former girlfriend.
Emmanuel Jeanty, executive officer of the Miami Gardens Police Department in Florida, confirmed they are working with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate Davis. “At this time, the Miami Gardens Police Department is actively working with the United States Marshal’s fugitive task force to locate and apprehend Mr. Davis,” said Jeanty. “Domestic violence is a serious crime, and the Miami Gardens Police Department remains committed to holding offenders accountable and protecting victims.”
A lawsuit alleges that Davis attacked his ex-partner Courtney Rossel at her workplace on October 27 and had previously threatened to kill her. Ms. Rossel also claims that Davis “physically assaulted and choked” her on at least four separate occasions. She is seeking $50,000 in damages and a jury trial. Police have stated that surveillance footage supports the victim’s account
“The investigation determined that Mr. Davis used force to restrain in an attempt to remove the victim from the location against her will,” added Jeanty. “What the police said is exactly in line with our lawsuit.
“So whatever investigation they did, they determined it was enough to get a judge to sign off on an arrest warrant,” Jeff Chukwuma, Rossel’s attorney, told ESPN. “The state attorney had to make the determination before, which coincides exactly with our civil complaint.”
Paul and Davis were scheduled to square off in an exhibition match in Miami on November 14, despite their weight class difference, with Davis being a lightweight and Paul typically a cruiserweight. The bout was not just for show but would declare a winner either by stoppage or by two human judges and an AI official if the fight went the distance.
However, following the lawsuit filing, Most Valuable Promotions opted to find a new opponent for Paul, which turned out to be Anthony Joshua. At the time of the cancellation, Paul vented his frustrations on social media: “Working with him is an absolute nightmare.
“The unprofessionalism, the bizarre requests, the showing up hours late to shoots. To the numerous arrests and related accusations and lawsuits. If you support this man you support the most vile sin a man can commit… I’m so sorry to everyone involved.”
In case his showdown with Davis fell through, Paul had earmarked a December date in Miami as a backup. After several call-outs, British boxing legend Joshua answered the American’s challenge. AJ finally floored Paul in the sixth round, having twice knocked him down in the preceding round. The ex-Disney star suffered a broken jaw in two places.
