Crystal Palace have five options to replace Glasner after announcement | Football | Sport
Speaking to reporters, the Austrian said: “A decision has already been taken, months ago I had a meeting with Steve [Parish, chairman] in October, the international break. We had a very long talk and I told him I will not sign a new contract. We agreed at the time it was the best to keep it between us. It’s the best that we could do that and keep it confidential for three months.”
Express Sport takes a look at five managers who could potentially replace Glasner next season…
Kieran McKenna
Palace have a long-standing interest in the Northern Irishman, having sounded him out for talks before Ipswich Town were promoted to the Premier League two seasons ago.
He is likely to remain on their radar, but any successful move won’t come cheap. McKenna is believed to be earning around £5million per year at Ipswich, and a significant break clause was reportedly inserted into the contract extension he signed in 2024.
Inigo Perez
The Eagles reportedly approached the Rayo Vallecano manager last year, when they were looking at potential replacements for Glasner in the event of his deciding to leave.
They could choose to revive that interest in the summer following Friday’s bombshell announcement. However, the Spaniard is currently overseeing a muted campaign in La Liga with his team winning just five games all season, which could change things.
Gareth Southgate
The former England boss hasn’t managed a team since leaving the Three Lions after the end of Euro 2024. However, the exit of Glasner at the end of the season could provide him with the perfect opportunity to return to the touchline.
Southgate is well-known to Palace supporters, having made over 150 appearances for the club during his football career. But there would be questions over his readiness to lead a Premier League club in addition to scrutiny over his playing style.
Frank Lampard
Another option could present itself in the form of a move for Lampard, who has taken Coventry to the verge of Premier League promotion for the first time in 26 years.
He already has valuable experience managing in England’s top flight from his stints in charge of Chelsea and Everton. Although those spells didn’t go exactly to plan, some would argue that he’s redeemed himself during his time at the Championship.
Michael Carrick
Alternatively, the Eagles could decide to appoint Carrick when he leaves Manchester United at the end of the season. That said, whether or not he emerges as a suitable candidate will depend on how he gets on at Old Trafford.
A successful end to the campaign could alert other Premier League clubs to his availability in the summer months. Carrick, meanwhile, would surely be eager to manage Palace with it deemed unlikely that he’ll be offered the United job permanently.
