A much-anticipated train in Spain could be closer than ever. The first phase of the Costa del Sol network will connect hotspots, Fuengirola and Marbella. Javier Salas, a government official in Malaga, announced that connecting Fuengirola and Marbella via rail is “feasible” and a “priority” for Sanchez’s government. 

The line could run from Nerja to Campo de Gibraltar but Salas, however, the work will be carried out in phases. Salas said: “The first phase should be the most urgent, the most necessary. And the route that has always been talked about as the most urgent is Fuengirola-Marbella”. Marbella is a popular Spanish city and a holiday hotspot. The Spanish city is currently without a railway, which has added pressure to its roads, reports The Olive Press.

Data shows that the section between the two hotspots is the busiest with the greatest traffic flow.

The railway could be a good alternative to driving, allowing tourists to easily travel between the destinations.

Over summer, the area is one which sees high levels of tourism, meaning the railway could be a huge help for both locals and visitors.

The Spanish Ministry of Transport commissioned a feasibility study into the railway in mid-2025. It offered a €992,000 (£865,000) contract to a consortium of transport companies to conduct the study.

The results of the study are expected to be published in summer.

Route options are being analysed, including a possible alignment running alongside the A-7 motorway, although he stressed that no final decision will be taken until the study is complete.

Works would be carried out in short sections to limit disruption on the A-7, with only one lane expected to be closed at a time, reports The Spanish Eye.

Locals have been waiting a long time for a rail network, with pressure mounting on authorities to begin looking into the infrastructure.
