Radio host issues public apology after backlash to David Beckham joke | Football | Sport
Sports presenter Shebahn Aherne has issued an apology on social media following a backlash over a story she shared about an encounter with David Beckham. The radio show host, who regularly appears on the talkSPORT breakfast show alongside Rangers legend Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil among others, posted an anecdote about an interview she conducted with the Manchester United and England icon.
She wrote: “My own Beckham story. I interviewed him a couple of years ago for talkSPORT drive… he put his hand on my arm and asked me to repeat a question. I sniffed that bit of arm several times on the train home.”
But one response read: “Imagine a male reporter saying that about an ex female sports star. I wonder how that would go.”
Aherne responded: “You’re so right. I’m sorry I’ve offended you.”
She later posted: “Apologies for the offence caused with this. It was a wee joke. Not here to offend anyone or objectify men. Deepest, sincerest apologies.”
Brooklyn launched an astonishing attack on his “controlling” parents and accused them of trying to ruin his relationship in a six-page statement posted to Instagram.
He has no intention of reconciling with his family, while David said that “children make mistakes” in his response to the row.
He told CNBC: “I’ve been able to use my platform and my following for Unicef and it’s been the biggest tool to make people aware of what’s going on around the world for children.
“I’ve tried to do the same. I’ve tried to do the same with my children to educate them. They make mistakes. Children are allowed to make mistakes. That’s how they learn.
“So that’s what I try to teach my kids. But you know, you have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well.”
