Liverpool manager Arne Slot has previously outlined why Manchester United might be making a significant error in offloading Marcus Rashford. The 28-year-old moved to Barcelona on loan during the summer following a breakdown in his relationship with former United boss Ruben Amorim. The forward has thrived in Catalonia, finding the net 10 times and providing 13 assists in 34 appearances.
Yet Slot’s remarks actually came during Rashford’s earlier loan stint at Aston Villa last season. Ahead of Liverpool‘s clash with Villa in February 2025, Slot heaped praise on the England international. He highlighted two key qualities that particularly caught his attention: pace and confidence in possession.
“I know Marcus Rashford as I follow the Premier League,” Slot said. “The first time I faced him was on the USA tour and was really impressed with how fast he is and comfortable on the ball. I’d be completely surprised if a player of that quality isn’t going to show that in upcoming months. He is a very good player.”
United are presently being led by Michael Carrick, though it remains uncertain whether the incoming permanent manager will view Rashford as part of their plans. Reports indicate that the Red Devils remain determined to sell the player regardless of his enhanced form.

The arrangement between United and Barcelona is understood to feature a clause allowing the Spanish club to purchase Rashford for approximately £26million.
Nevertheless, United are reportedly reconsidering that agreement, as Rashford’s enhanced displays have increased his market worth. Claims have also emerged that United refuse to reduce the £26m option figure, despite suggestions Barcelona wish to renegotiate terms.

The England forward has publicly stated his desire to remain at the Camp Nou past this season, potentially complicating any United attempt to bring Rashford back should they choose to do so.
During an interview on Barcelona’s YouTube channel in late 2025, Rashford disclosed he’s thoroughly enjoying his Spanish experience. He said: “I’m really enjoying my time in Spain. The weather is the best part. It’s a very big change. I’m learning every day, I’m really enjoying it.
“The team is fantastic. I just have to be in the right position. I’ll keep trying to do this. We have to keep going like this to be our best. We have a lot more to do this season.”
He added: “I’m enjoying this football club, and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game, so to play here is an honour.

“I just believe that things happen when they’re supposed to happen. It’s not the first time I spoke with Barcelona about potentially coming here, but for whatever reason, it didn’t happen in the past, and now is my opportunity to make it happen.

“I feel like there’s no time like the present now. People forget this, but 23 years of my life was with Manchester United. So sometimes you just need a change.
“I think maybe this is the case with me and yeah, I’m enjoying everything. I don’t feel there is much change in me, I just feel it’s a new environment and culture and one I looked forward to coming here. It’s just about me adapting and fitting in as well as possible. I’m so hungry to keep improving.”
