Snooker legend backs rapid format Ronnie O’Sullivan is set to star in | Other | Sport

Cliff Thornburn wasn’t renowned for his speed of play during his snooker career. ‘The Grinder’, as he was known during his pomp in the 1970s and 80s, wore opponents down with a patient and careful style of play.

However, he has given his full support to an innovative format where speed is of the essence. The Snooker 900 format sees 15-minute frames, a 20-second shot clock and ball-in-hand for fouls. Some of the sport’s top stars have already had a go, with Neil Robertson, Mark Selby, Mark Williams and John Higgins taking part in the Crucible Cup in November. Snooker 900 is run by Ronnie O’Sullivan’s manager and the boss of World Seniors Snooker, Jason Francis. The Rocket is a backer of the concept, which launched in 2022, and regularly promotes it on his social media channels.

The seven-time world champion will have a go himself at April’s John Virgo Trophy in Ireland, which will be played under 900 rules. With regular coverage of the Snooker 900 channel on Pluto TV, amateurs and emerging stars also have the chance to show off their skills.

During a recent visit to the UK, the Canadian legend, 78, watched a round of Snooker 900 action first-hand at Reading’s Crucible Club and was impressed with what he saw.

“I do like the rules,” said the 1980 world champion. “It’s straightforward. I like the cue ball in hand [after a foul]. That’s a big advantage.

“With the time restriction, it’s fun, it’s hair-raising in a way. It’s different and suits a North American audience. I love the idea.”
