Man Utd damage from Ruben Amorim sacking as £37m reality laid bare | Football | Sport
Manchester United’s choice to hire and subsequently dismiss Ruben Amorim may eventually cost the club upwards of £37million. United parted company with Amorim last month, as the decision to remove the Portuguese head coach brought his 14-month tenure at Old Trafford to a close.
United appointed Darren Fletcher on an temporary basis following Amorim’s departure, with Michael Carrick subsequently being named as the club’s interim head coach through to the end of the season. Amorim’s last match in charge of United was a 1-1 draw with Leeds in the Premier League, a result which positioned the Red Devils sixth in the table and facing a difficult challenge to secure Champions League qualification.
Since Carrick assumed control, the interim head coach has claimed victory in five of his six matches at the helm and has steered United to fourth place in the table and ahead of rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.
United disclosed their most recent financial details to the New York Stock Exchange, which revealed the costs associated with sacking Amorim and his backroom team earlier this year.
Altogether, United may be required to pay £15.9million to Amorim and his coaching staff following their departure from Old Trafford earlier this year.
United were required to spend approximately £11million to secure Amorim’s appointment initially, with the compensation fee paid to his previous employer, Sporting CP.
Additionally, United revealed they paid £10.4million to dismiss their former boss, Erik ten Hag, back in October 2024.
Consequently, United’s combined expenditure stemming from their choice to part company with Ten Hag before appointing and subsequently dismissing Amorim could ultimately reach £37.3million, demonstrating just how spectacularly the experiment did not work as planned.
It remains uncertain who United will select as their permanent manager come summer, with numerous candidates already being touted for the position. Should Carrick maintain his impressive form, he could certainly feature amongst the contenders.
United’s next fixture sees them take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, where Carrick and his side will be eager to secure maximum points in their pursuit of Champions League qualification for next season.
