Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has seen his assault and bribery conviction upheld six years after he was arrested in Greece. The England international had been handed a 15-month suspended sentence after a guilty verdict by the Greek Courts.

The 32-year-old was charged with non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery for an incident in Mykonos. Maguire has been found guilty on all three counts over the incident in August 2020, but his legal team are planning to appeal the verdict.

Maguire’s original sentence of 21 months has been reduced to 15 and 20 days by judges. The former Leicester City player has also been hit with a fine worth €1,500 (£1,304).

He did not appear in court and is expected to be named in United‘s starting line-up against Newcastle on Wednesday evening (8:15pm GMT). His brother, Joe, was acquitted of attempted bribery, however, the court upheld charges of aggravated assault and verbal abuse of the police.

The incident happened when Maguire was enjoying a night out with his wife, Fern, sister Daisy, brother Joe and five others. The group were waiting for a taxi to take them back to their villa when two Albanian men approached Daisy and tried to talk to her.

Maguire claimed that the men injected Daisy with an unknown substance, and she began drifting in and out of consciousness. The former Leicester player said that he attempted to get her to a hospital but was instead taken to a police station, where he alleged that he was beaten on the legs by uniformed men who told him that his football career was over.
