Celtic staff member ‘attacked’ as Rangers fans storm pitch in ugly scenes | Football | Sport
Both sets of supporters stormed the pitch in ugly scenes at Ibrox, resulting in an alleged ‘attack’ on a member of Celtic’s coaching team. The Scottish Cup derby match went to penalties after 120 minutes ended goalless, with both teams having goals disallowed.
Ultimately, Tomas Cvancara’s penalty determined the shootout, igniting pandemonium in the Broomloan End, which was filled with away fans for the first time in eight years. The celebrations overflowed onto the pitch and police had to step in when Rangers fans stormed the pitch. Amid the turmoil, Premier Sports reported that a member of Celtic’s coaching staff had been ‘attacked’.
Penalty hero Tomas Cvancara also had blood on his shirt at the conclusion, but it was unclear how this occurred.
As police and stewards tried to regain control of the situation, commentator Rory Hamilton said: “One of the Celtic coaching staff has been attacked by an individual. It is an ugly, ugly end to what has been a superb game of football. There is absolutely no need. This is lunacy.”
The distressing scenes led to both teams being escorted off the pitch by police, marking a regrettable conclusion to a semi-final where the atmosphere was greatly enhanced by the packed away end.
Former referee Des Roache told the Daily Record: “These scenes are absolutely embarrassing for our game.”
Former Rangers and Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam concurred that it was a “disgrace” and “a sad day for Scottish football” as violence marred the cup tie.
He added to talkSPORT: “We had an incident like this a few years ago in the Scottish Cup final, Hibs and Rangers. Both teams invaded it, both supporters invaded the pitch but this, for the Old Firm that we talk about being our leadership teams and they represent, it’s an embarrassment for our game.
“And as a national team we’re trying to improve and we’re trying to get better. but these two clubs have let us down as a nation and they have to have a look at themselves today.
“Both football clubs have to look at themselves because they are the standard-bearers for us as football clubs and they have, both supporters have let themselves down.
“It’s an embarrassment for Scottish football. This should not be happening. In this day and age this should not be happening and we have to get control of it quickly because if it doesn’t it’ll keep escalating and escalating and there’ll be big big problems.”
