Fury as popular cruise line quietly increases cabin, drinks and dining fees | World | News
A premium cruise line has come under fire for hiking its online gratuities and service charges. Princess Cruises, a US-based firm with 17 ships travelling American and international routes, has quietly raised its service charge for onboard extras by between 18% and 20%. The charge is added to amenities including drinks and specialty dining, and accompanies a further increase of the line’s daily “crew appreciation” gratuity.
It has seen the daily cost for onboard suites per person rise from $18 to $20, from $17 to $19 for mini-suites, reserve collections and cabanas, and from $16 to $18 for all other rooms, as per The Independent. Would-be travellers took to the Cruise Critic forum to vent their frustrations over the price rises, with one person writing: “I personally think 20% service charge on already insanely over-priced beverages is taking nickel and diming too far.”
They added: “I might tip that for good service in a restaurant, but … I highly doubt this will result in more bartenders and better service … We are just dollar signs to Princess.”
However, another acknowledged that the additional cost of a $15 drink would be just 30 cents under the changes. They wrote: “Are people really going to stop cruising over 60 cents a day?”
Some were angered by the cruise line’s pattern of “silently making increases”, while others said they were willing to pay the crew appreciation costs “if it is going entirely to those who actually provide the services”.
Princess Cruises clarified in a post on its website that the charge is “subject to adjustment” in the case of “dissatisfaction for any reason”.
“In the unlikely event you remain dissatisfied for any reason, the Crew Appreciation is subject to adjustment, at your discretion, at any time during the cruise up to the time you settle your onboard account prior to disembarkment,” it read.
“If you do not choose to adjust this daily charge while on board, your payment becomes final and nonrefundable.”
A spokesperson for Princess Cruises said: “We regularly review out pricing structure to ensure we can continue delivering the high-quality service and experience our guests expect, while supporting the crew members who make that experience possible.
“These changes help us keep pace with rising operational costs while ensuring we continue recognising the exceptional service our crew provides worldwide.
“We distribute 100% of collected gratuities directly back to our crew in support of their dedication and hard work. We remain committed to delivering outstanding value and memorable vacations for our guests.”
